VIENNA, VA—The Senator players and coaches expect to win every single game. When they do lose a game, they tend to take it out on their next opponent. That is exactly what happened in the second game of Monday’s doubleheader against the Fairfax Nationals.
In game one, the Senators were not able to capitalize on a number of opportunities and ended up losing to the Nationals 5-3. The Senators were only able to score single runs in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings while the Nationals scored one in the first, two in the fifth, and two in the seventh for the win.
In the first inning, Harris Mitchell grounded out to shortstop to drive in Max Warren from first and give the Nationals a 1-0 lead.
Fairfax took a 3-0 lead in the fifth inning when Scott Powell hit a two-run homerun off of Senator starter Tyler Kimmons.
The Senators got on the board when Tim Guidry doubled to drive in Donald Brown from first base in the sixth.
Fairfax extended their lead to 5-1 in the seventh inning. Jorge Castillo scored on a throwing error by the Senator first baseman to make the score 4-1. The Nationals scored their final run when Justin Rolland singled in Mitchell Harris.
The Senators put together a rally in the eighth inning, but only came away with one run when Guillermo Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Donald Brown. Brown’s run made the score 5-2.
In the ninth, the Senators mounted a promising rally, but again only came away with one run when Brandon Daguio singled to drive in Will Bussey from third to make the final score 5-3. Bussey had tripled earlier in the inning.
After squandering a number of opportunities in game one, the Senators made sure that they did not squander a single opportunity in game two. The Senators absolutely demolished the Fairfax pitching in game two. The Senators tallied two runs in the first, one in the second, six in the third, two in the fourth, two in the fifth, one in the sixth, and an amazing 10 runs in the seventh inning to obliterate the Nationals 24-4. The Senators looked like they were taking batting practice against the Nationals pitching as they collected 28 hits as a team. They tallied seven more hits in the game than they did outs.
A number of Senators had career days. AJ Lamonda collected four hits, including a monstrous three-run homerun, and drove in eight runs in the victory. Donald Brown had three hits and three RBIs. Matt Lesyk and Scott Scudder also added three hits and three RBIs. Leighton Autrey and Wes Schirtzinger both hit their first homeruns of the season in back to back fashion during the fourth inning. Eleven Senators registered hits in the game while nine of those eleven players also tallied an RBI.
Unless you were in the stands to watch this offensive clinic, it is hard to believe that it happened. The Nationals could not do anything to stop the Senator bats. They kept bringing in new pitchers, but the Senators were hitting anything and everything that came over the plate.
Manager Chris Burr said, “ I have never seen anything like that. No matter what the Nationals did, we just kept hitting. It was unbelievable.”
After the game, the loss in the first game was a distant memory. The offensive outburst is an example of the resilience that the Senators have. They think that they should win every game, and when they do not win, they take it personally. The Senators are now 6-3 in the second half and 23-6 overall. They return to action tonight when they take on the Fauquier Gators at Fauquier High School. The game is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
