LEXINGTON, Va--Former Senator and current VMI shortstop Matt Smith has signed a free agent contract to play professional baseball with the Texas Rangers Organization.  Smith is the 12th former Senator to be drafted or signed by professional organization in 2005.  Smith played for the Senators during the 2003 season.

Smith finished his career at VMI ranking in the top five all time in hits, stolen bases, at bats, and games played.  He was named to the First Team All-Big South Conference this season.  In his senior season, Smith set careers highs in hits, homeruns, RBIs, at bats, walks, stolen bases, and games played. 

Smith joins a list of over a 100 former Senators to be drafted or signed by professional clubs since 1994.
